The Red Gloves

Red Gloves is a participatory team operating within SculthorpeStudios land-based practice.

Members act as co-authors of form through direct physical engagement with material and site.

This film documents the unfolding of the Red Gloves work across time, showing the distributed participation and physical negotiation required to bring the forms into being.

The ‘Red Gloves’ Group

Red Gloves operates as a defined unit within a broader participatory system.

The team is not assembled as an audience or support function, but as an active component in the generation of form.

Work is structured so that outcomes emerge through interaction between people, material and site conditions.

What they Do

The team engages directly in the construction of each work.

This includes lifting, carrying, positioning, rotating and stabilising large-scale forms, as well as responding to balance, weight and spatial alignment.

Decisions are made in situ, through handling and adjustment, rather than following pre-determined instructions.

Authorship is distributed across the team through action.

Each placement, adjustment or refusal alters the final configuration.

The work is not executed to a fixed plan; it is resolved through a series of negotiated decisions between participants, material behaviour and site constraints.

The lead artist defines the framework and conditions, but the final form is co-authored through the team’s collective engagement.

Authorship is shared. Outcomes are not pre-determined. They are constructed through shared action.
