SculthorpeStudios is is an interdisciplinary art practice investigating systems, structures and emergent behaviour through sculpture, installation, participatory methodologies and environmental practice.

The work examines how organisational, environmental, institutional and behavioural systems shape experience, participation and form.

Rather than treating systems as background context, the practice approaches systems themselves as subjects of artistic inquiry.

We have had Mitchell Cawte of @Mitchell.Foto support us with fabulous photography during 2026.

Depending on the inquiry, projects may employ sculptural construction, participatory processes, site-responsive installation, systems mapping or collaborative methodologies.

Many methodologies are employed for observing, navigating and materially encoding complex systemic relationships.

Studio Structure

Projects are delivered across the UK and Australia, working with public sites, organisations and independent collaborators.

Conceptual Direction and Artistic Methodology. Dawn Sculthorpe-Hayter

Systems Practice: Sculthorpe Studios is an interdisciplinary art practice investigating systems, structures and emergent behaviour through sculpture, installation, painting and participatory methodologies. Informed by complexity science, ecology, behavioural systems, organisational theory and network dynamics, the work explores how institutional, environmental and behavioural systems generate conditions, relationships and form. Systems are treated not as background context, but as the central subject of inquiry.

Collaborators and Sites. Context-specific partnerships shaping each project across public sites, organisations and independent collaborators in the UK and Australia.

Practice

The studio works across multiple modes and material approaches:

Sculpture & Installation

Material-led construction across indoor and outdoor contexts.

Includes large-scale forms, modular structures and site-responsive installation.

Painting & Surface

Two-dimensional work exploring surface, composition and material behaviour.

Operates independently and alongside spatial and installation projects.

Environmental Works

Projects developed in direct response to landscape, architecture and site conditions.

Focus on placement, orientation and environmental interaction.

Performative Works

Time-based work where making, movement and assembly form the outcome.

Includes live construction, temporary configurations and documented actions.

Participatory Systems

Structured, co-authored processes where outcomes emerge through participation, material interaction and system design.

Reporting

The studio produces formal reports to document outcomes and acknowledge stakeholders.
